“King Cake”, or Galette des Rois, is our favourite way to celebrate Epiphany, which comes from the Biblical story of three kings who bring gifts to Baby Jesus.
This version of the typical French galette is made with a top and bottom layer of flaky puff pastry, filled with a delicious custard-y chestnut almond cream, further enhanced by blackcurrant frangipane that is sandwiched in between.
Instead of the traditional lucky charm made from porcelain baked inside, we have hidden a safe-to-eat almond as the lucky charm inside the cake. Whoever finds the hidden almond (lucky charm) is crowned “king” or “queen” for the day. A crown and porcelain charms are packed separately to complete the experience.<
